CLIENT: THE MARINA THEATRE, LOWESTOFT, 2022
In the spring of 2022, I
joined a creative writing course at The Marina Theatre in Lowestoft,
Suffolk. The course was run in conjunction with the National Theatre
in London and, for six weeks, taught us the techniques involved in
constructing a seven-minute play.
Under the anthology
heading Queen: Unspoken Stories, the short plays were performed
at The Marina on Wednesday 1 June 2022, the day before the Queen's
Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Spinning Wheel Theatre's Amy Wylie
directed, while Becca Gibbs provided the innovative production design.
My play, The Queen is Dead, told the story of Beatrice, a woman
with dementia living in a care home. On the day of the Queen's
Platinum Jubilee, she's visited by her son Artie, who has disturbing
news... As part of the course, I was allowed to attend, comment on and
photograph rehearsals.
Thanks to Charlotte McGuinness for permission to use her photographs
of the dress rehearsal.
